wordless wednesday [56]

Part One: wordless
about·

Part Two: wednesday!!!

This is the only way these stands look fine to me: when they are closed. The eve of June 23rd is called the Nit de Sant Joan (St John’s Eve) in Catalonia, where - according to old traditions - the summer solstice is celebrated with bonfires, fireworks and firecrackers, the latter being sold in stands like the pictured one only for a couple of weeks in june. Bonfires are said to keep away demons, diseases and misfortunes. Fireworks are pretty and fun to watch (not only) on a summer night. But firecrackers???? they only disturb my peaceful path while I run errands in town minding my own business. Until a kid lights a firecracker all of a sudden and my heart stands still for two seconds, terribly scared. I only have to cope with them until saturday so there is still hope!

  1. Our big firework event is the 5th of November. It used to be that it was one night. Now it goes on and on for weeks, much to the distress of our cats. on that note Happy WW!

  9. Some of them scare me too. We have a very short window here in California. They start selling them a few days before the 4th of July and when that day is over no more. Many are banned as well. We are going to watch the Hilton fireworks on the California Delta this year. Huge event. Happy WW. :)

  11. The 4th of July is coming, but that stuff is totally illegal here, except for the City's firework's display. So we don't have those stands and don't have to worry about them being opened. Unfortunately, there are always a few schmucks who bring the stuff in from other counties and scare the dogs & people. But not very many.

  14. I hate them too, it's not even fun ! My son when he was 6 or 7 had put some in our open fire on New Year ! When Mr. Gattino lightened the fire you can imagine what happened ! Rag with holes etc. The most surprised was the little one, he only wanted to wish us a happy new year !

  20. I'm very "skittish" and jumpy with loud noises. I tell my family "that thoroughbreds are skittish!"

  22. I love going to see fireworks. But, firecrackers are dangerous and should be banned!

  23. sounds like you're pretty jumpy. good thing you don't have to put up with them for long. Firecrackers are a big thing in Malaysia (where I come form) so I'm pretty used to them and they don't bother me.
