On September 11, 2001 the Mars were flying back from Hamburg to Barcelona. We first heard about a terrorist attack while waiting for our luggage but didn't really have a clue until we got home to watch CNN. I don't remember ever watching as much television as during those days.
On September 11, 2007 I am looking forward to a quiet day because:
"The Diada is in fact the anniversary of the day in 1714, when the Franco-Spanish army captured Barcelona, ending the region’s autonomous status. Five thousand Catalans withstood the attack of forty thousand Castilian and French soldiers until the fall of the city on September 11th. This annual commemoration of a bloody and controversial episodes of Catalonia’s history is a patriotic expression of emotion and pride by the Catalonian people.
The event is marked by parades in towns and villages across Catalonia and the red and gold of the Catalonian flag are the colours of the day."
Oh, and they will also be doing this kind of human towers, castellers!
Oh, how interesting I didn't know that. But I think I have read somewhere that they still not like each other very much. That's the same here in Belgium now, it becomes more and more a sad joke with the flemish and the wallons ! And it's only the politicians, people are getting very well together !
ReplyDeleteIch finde es gut dass Du den Amis zeigst dass es auch noch andere schlimme Sachen gab als der 11. September ! Dieses Jahr ist aber weniger Zirkus auf den Blogs als letztes !
One wonders what 9/11/01 would have been like without all the TV coverage. Yes, we too, watched endless TV for many days. It was a sad time for all Americans, but for the world as well.
ReplyDeleteWOW! I had NO idea that September 11th was such a huge date in history! I mean - you know - we American's know it's big (and sad) for US... but isn't that kind of amazing? I wonder if other countries have special meaning in 9/11 as well....
ReplyDeleteHAPPY NATIONAL DAY :-)
ReplyDeleteCheers for Catalonia!
I remember those formations, they're wonderful!
I still wanna go to Barcelona and one day I will!
Then we can have a glass of champagne and toast for real :-)
It's good this day has a happier meaning for others.
ReplyDeleteYea, I remember you mentioned this day in your last comments on my Boat post.
ReplyDeleteHappy National Day to you all the way from Norway:-)
I have never heard that bit of lore before. It is nice to hear of a positive note on a 9/11.
