I am the kind of person who only goes to church on vacation to admire the architecture and details. Back in 2006 I visited the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela , situated in the city of the same name in Galicia, Spain. The cathedral is the reputed burial-place of Saint James the Great, one of the apostles. It is the destination of the Way of St. James , a major historical pilgrimage route since the Middle Ages.
The cathedral was completed in 1211. The city and its cathedral, churches and monasteries were renovated during the Baroque period (17th century) to give them the appearance they have today. For a bit of history click here.
There are people at 6pm for a sense of scale...
And a detail showing the Apostle St James (Santiago).

That is quite the masterpiece of Architecture.
ReplyDeleteWhat a glorious cathedral! I can only imagine what the inside must be like!
ReplyDeleteGreat post!
The workmanship is outstanding. The years and years of work that went into building cathedrals back then is difficult to imagine.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Beverley. With this much detail in the architecture, the inside must be glorious.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! If you haven't read the book, "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho, you must, very magickal and special with the main character named "Santiago" on a quest. Thank you for these gorgeous pictures.

ReplyDeleteI'm always in awe of older buildings and amazed at the level of detail and workmanship considering they had no modern tools.
ReplyDeleteFortunatley the church had so much money to built these beautiful cathedrals which we can still admire today, while in these places people starved and died. That's christian !
ReplyDeleteHi Mar ~~ This is a neat post, don't you just love all those old, old, cathedrals? There is a lot of history in many of them. Some of the people in those church's history have affected the history of the States.
ReplyDeleteI've been to Spain three times but haven't been that far west. We once drove from Normandy, France to Gilbralter, over to Granada, then up to Albecete. Last spring we spent some time in Barcelona. The lines were too long to go to Gotti's Cathedral. I imagine you visit that when the tourists are mostly gone? :)
..
Beautiful architecture. Lovely capture, full of depth. :)
ReplyDeleteIsn't that just FABULOUS!?! Oh how I would love to visit there one day!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos and interesting history. Perfect for C. Thank you for sharing. Silly me, I did not even think of the word 'church' let alone 'cathedral'.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes,

So pretty!! I haven't been there in several years so my memory could be off but it's reminds me a little of the huge Catholic church in downtown Mexico City.
ReplyDeleteWhoa! The size of the building is staggering! It is gorgeous. They don't do architecture like that anymore.
ReplyDeleteMarvelous architecture! Must be something to stay in front of it and admiring!!!
ReplyDeleteI used to love to visit there when I was a little girl.
