01. Thirteening on the very last day of august...
02. I love this time of the year, the temperatures are much more pleasant than a month ago...
03. Mr 18 started college this week.
04. In Barcelona, studying Business Administration.
05. He is living at home, like in the best Spanish tradition, unless you are from a small town and have to go someplace else to go to the university. I must say I am very happy about this , and Mr. 18 is too (at least for the time being!)
06. I should have repeated the fact that he hasn't left home while writing my tuesday post. It often happens to me when I write: I tend to oversee things or miss important points, which become clear to me after a few comments and I cannot constantly update posts! I should think things over before pressing the publish button...
07. Universities in Spain don't have a campus like in the US. They have buildings scattered in an area of the city. Professors are often paid by the hour (so to speak), so they have jobs in the non-academic world as well and don't have an office/office hours...
08. The concept of a major or a minor is not known, students attend one specific school (i.e. the School of Business) within the university and concentrate on one area of study, there are no requirements of extra credits beyond the field of study for a broader knowledge, like it is often the case in the US.
09. There are no fraternities/sororities (but the kids find their ways to party!). Did you pledge a sorority while in college?
10. On to more domestic affairs: we ordered a ton (2,200 lb) of wood (literally) for our fireplace
11. it looked like pic nr. 1 at the very entrance.
1) 2)
12. Three people and a bit over an hour later it looked like nr. 2.
13. A friend couple is arriving this afternoon for a visit until sunday, so I will be rather late visiting but I will drop by. Happy TT!

Happy Thursday!! Sounds like a busy end of August! Glad that Mr 18 is able to still be at home with you all!
ReplyDeleteI'll be ordering wood soon. Waiting for fall to come. It takes a bit longer in the south.
ReplyDeleteHappy TT
That's interesting, about universities in Spain. It's way different than the ones here in the Philippines. :D
ReplyDeleteHappy Thursday!
Wow, that's interesting about college there. I would not have known that if you hadn't written about it. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteMy T13 is up :-)
Happy Thursday...now seems to be the time to order wood. Just a few days ago I noticed that my grocery store had two bundles of wood left and I though I should probably buy them...but by the time I passed them again they were gone. But I was just at the store yesterday and they had more wood.
ReplyDeleteWe buy it for camping as I have a gas fireplace & furnace.
Have a wonderful weekend with your houseguests.
ReplyDeleteI learned a lot about colleges/universities. I'm going to tell my Jacob it's custom to stay at home during college... he's in 5th grade. Maybe he'll believe me ;)
ReplyDeleteI did't pledge a sorority... although a friend begged me to. I made my way through nursing school pregnant and then with a baby... all by myself. That was tough, but definitely the reason I'm so strong and independent! But the reason I'll miss Jacob when he leaves... we've literally grown up together!
Happy T13! Enjoy your company!
Thanks for stopping by!
(Bless your heart... that's a lot of wood!)
We need to ride down to my cousin, Janet, (www.fondofsnape)'s house and pick up our wonter wood. She had a huge tree cut down by the utility company, and that's all the wood we will need.
ReplyDeleteHappy TT
Wow, that wood stacking looks like it was good exercise! In the UK we just concentrate on one area of study too adn although we have a university campus with clubs you can join we don't have fraternities either. Some uni campus have more residential halls for students than others. When I was at Uni I rented privately though.
ReplyDeleteWonderful entry for the last day of the month :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Thursday!
That reminds me that I need to order wood before the prices start going up.
ReplyDeleteInteresting how college works in different countries!
I just watched a House Hunters this week, and the couple was looking for a place in Barcelona. It looked like such a lovely city!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by!
Isn't it so comforting to still have your 18 year old college student stay with you at home. Over here in our Country, people are clanish.
ReplyDeleteMy TT13 is up too.
What a busy week - Great list
ReplyDeleteGreat TT! Sounds busy! Have a wonderful weekend with your houseguests.
ReplyDeletemar says: thanks TC, I will!
mar, I think your blog is very special. I like the unique touches you've added to it, especially the pictures. It's so fun to read about life in Spain, as I love Europe very much. Also, I'm glad you're son is home. I wish the states had that same tradition for college; I'm not quite sure how to let mine go, and he's only 15 now.
ReplyDeletemar says: thanks so much, Belleza, for your kind words! :)
Wow, I found the whole university concept interesting, especially with the professors being paid by the hour. Also that the campuses are spread out across the city. They do that here, with the community colleges and are starting to do it with the "outreach" campuses for the major universities.
ReplyDeleteHappy TT :) If you have a catalog you like to order from online, that's the theme of my TT. LOL.
Very interesting 13! Thanks for commenting on mine!
ReplyDeleteHome of Pass the Torch Tuesday
Happy TT!!Wish the colleges were like that here:) Our daughter will be going next year and don't look forward to her leaving:( Have a great day!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm always adding things to clarify my posts too. And getting our wood ready. You can hear my husband's chainsaw all weekend. I enjoyed learning a few things about college Spanish style.
ReplyDeleteMy 13 are strannnnggggerrr than fiction.
It's really interesting how different college is in Europe compared to the US - and I bet it's differnet in other countries too!
ReplyDeleteI look at the wood pile and wish I had a fireplace.... But then, I'd need a place that got cold enough to actually use it too...
ReplyDeleteI used to love heating with wood but hated the mess ;~)
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed you Thirteen...mine's up, too!
I have never understood the concept here in the states of having to take all these required courses before you can get onto the subject or career you are REALLY interested in...That is why a specialized school is such a wonderful thing. For the very first time in my life I looked forward to scholl every day when I was in Drama School! Every class we had revolved around the original subject...so though there may have been a class or two you weren't as inteested in....it was still MORE interesting than not! You know?
ReplyDeleteI think it's great that 18 is onto the school that teaches him all about what he is truly interested in! And by concentrating on this, one finds out pretty quickly if this is the life you want....
hi Mar,
ReplyDeletenothing beats a wood fire...need to get our winter store in soon...
I miss my fireplace! It's too HOT here in AZ for one! Have a wonderful visit with your friends!
ReplyDeleteHappy TT!
Wow, that's alot of wood. We will see how cold it gets this year in Texas.
ReplyDeleteGreat list. Mine are up.
I like the idea of just studying your "major", I think students would do better studying what they need instead of having to worry about not graduating because of a gym class.
ReplyDeleteTake care and look forward to visiting next week,
Frances
Very informative list! I didn't know all that about universities in Spain, even though I took a couple of classes at the University of Salamanca one summer eleven years ago.
ReplyDeleteMy TT is up, too:
http://southern-born-and-bred.blogspot.com
Sounds like a busy time...
ReplyDeleteMy Very Special 13 is up.
i love hearing about this info! i like the fact that you go to school for what you want to go to school for and dont mess around with all that extra class crap!
ReplyDeletehave fun with your friends!
ooh - wood fires!! :-)
ReplyDeleteNothing to beat them.....
Of course, being contrary, we don't have one!

My TT is up
Hey Mar,
ReplyDeleteOne of the nice things about my college is that there were no fraternities or sororities.
My oldest starts college next year. This is the high anxiety year for me. Getting all the ducks in a row.
Spanish colleges sound like NYU in New York.
That reminds me, I need to get some firewood.
Have a nice weekend.
Rick
It's nice to have your son at home while going to college. My son went to a college in town, about 40 mins away, so he commuted from home until his 3rd year. He was working and going to college full time, so he go himself an apartment, and has been gone from home 18 years. :)
ReplyDeleteMy TT is up.
August flew by for me. Glad the weather is good, still hot here. No pledging for me thankfully, couldn't take it. How fun to have a fire place, although it is rare to have the weather to use it where I am. Thanks for stopping by!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post! I'm glad Mr. 18 is still home with you. We are ordering wood too... I'll be stacking as soon as it arrives... fun fun fun...
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
LBC
This was very interesting to me...and I didn't know that the universities there were different than here. *s* I hope you had a pleasant time with your company!
ReplyDeleteOH that firewood looks so wonderful. I can almost hear the wood crackling and smell it. We have a gas fireplace and I really miss the sounds and smells of real wood burning. Enjoy
ReplyDeleteI like the way universities work in Spain, much more efficient.
ReplyDeletewow...college...mine will be driving this fall. :\
ReplyDeleteI am starting to dig into your archives now....visiting from Wendy's blog. I am enjoying the glimpses into life in Spain.
ReplyDelete:-)
