Inside the Cathedral of St. Peter in Geneva (where John Calvin gave his inspiring sermons during the mid-16th century, the internet told me this after my trip...) there is also a chapel. Here you see a detail of the ceiling of the 14th-century Gothic Chapel of the Maccabees, which was used as a warehouse and then a lecture hall after the Reformation, but in 1878, it was reconsecrated and richly decorated.

ReplyDeleteThe detailing is impressive, the various shapes and designs imparting a real feeling of depth in the ceiling. The artistry is af that era, not to be replicated on today's architecture...
