C is for cathedral and Compostela

Santiago de Compostela - Galicia - Spain.Images via Wikipedia

I am the kind of person who only  goes to church on vacation to admire the architecture and details. Back in 2006 I visited the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela , situated in the city of the same name in Galicia, Spain. The cathedral is the reputed burial-place of Saint James the Great, one of the apostles. It is the destination of the Way of St. James , a major historical pilgrimage route since the Middle Ages.

The cathedral was completed in 1211. The city and its cathedral, churches and monasteries were renovated during the Baroque period (17th century) to give them the appearance they have today. For a bit of history click here.

There are people at 6pm for a sense of scale...

And a detail showing the Apostle St James (Santiago).

C is also for coffee, how about some??

  12. The workmanship is outstanding. The years and years of work that went into building cathedrals back then is difficult to imagine.

  18. I'm always in awe of older buildings and amazed at the level of detail and workmanship considering they had no modern tools.

  19. Fortunatley the church had so much money to built these beautiful cathedrals which we can still admire today, while in these places people starved and died. That's christian !

  20. Hi Mar ~~ This is a neat post, don't you just love all those old, old, cathedrals? There is a lot of history in many of them. Some of the people in those church's history have affected the history of the States.

I've been to Spain three times but haven't been that far west. We once drove from Normandy, France to Gilbralter, over to Granada, then up to Albecete. Last spring we spent some time in Barcelona. The lines were too long to go to Gotti's Cathedral. I imagine you visit that when the tourists are mostly gone? :)

  24. So pretty!! I haven't been there in several years so my memory could be off but it's reminds me a little of the huge Catholic church in downtown Mexico City.
