the guests brought (sun)flowers...

I am working with the enthusiasm of a man from Marseille eating bouillabaisse, which shouldn't come as a surprise to you because I am busy painting huge sunflowers. - Vincent Van Gogh, Arles, letter to his brother Theo, who continually and selflessly provided financial support. Van Gogh arrived in Arles in early 1888, he was fascinated by the Provençal landscapes, producing over 300 paintings and drawings during his time there.

Updated to include the agenda:
today is

  1. Gorgeous sunflowers!! I love sunflowers...they make me feel cheery. I'm trying to decorate my kitchen in sunflowers and butterflies (with yellow and white). But those are stunning...thank you for sharing!

Michele sent me to smell the flowers :)

  2. Sunflowers are my favourite flowers and I have seen the original of van Gogh's sunflowers, but it was very disappointing because the colors were not at all so bright as on copies !
I have got a bouquet of sunflowers from my "DIL" which my son brought from Amsterdam, he came for my birthday today. BTW you missed the gifts I've got I wanted to add them to my blog but the phone was ringing all the time, so I just published now.

  7. Vielen Dank für die liebe Geburtstagskarte ! Habe mich sehr gefreut.

  13. It's difficult for us to watch TV ! We always watch Rosie playing it's too funny especially with fat Arthur ! He lazily lays down and the little one danses around him and attacks, he only watches and from time to time gives a little slap with his paw !

  15. I loved that quote about Van Gogh. I'm sure you've read Irving Stone's novel about his life, The Agony and The Ecstasy? Or, maybe that was Michaelangelo, but Stone did write an outstanding biography of Van Gogh which made me feel like I knew him.

  16. Van Gogh has always been such an inspiration. This GREAT GREAT Artist, who sold only one painting in his whole life---And that was, I believe, to his brother...died, not knowing that HE Changed the face of Modern Art, forever!

I LOVE Sunflowers....They are so extrordinary, aren't they?

  18. I remembered! Irving Stone's novel about Van Gogh is "Lust for Life." Truly, it's worth the read, especially if your a fan of his, or sunflowers, or the south of France. Like we are.
