Thursday Thirteen [ 65 ]: Seville

borrowed from this place:http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/26/ES_Sevilla%2C_location_map_.png
01. I am flying to Seville ( a 75-min flight from Barcelona) for 40 hours tomorrow.
02. To interpret the map: BCN is the airport code for Barcelona and SVQ is the one for Seville, 100 km = 62 miles. The Balearic Islands (the largest one is Mallorca) are below BCN, the Canary Islands are away beyond the scale and therefore in a square.
03. Seville is the largest city in Southern Spain, universally famous for being a joyous place!
04. The city is more than two thousand years old.
05. According to the legend, Seville was founded by Hercules. It was called Hispalis under the Romans and Isbiliya with the Moors.
06. It has a Mediterranean climate, with an average maximum temperature of 35C / 95F in summer and an average minimum of 13C / 55F in winter.
07. Sevilla lies on the banks of the Guadalquivir , the fourth largest river in Spain and the longest in Andalusia
borrowed from this place: http://es.studylanguages.org/images/sevilla/sevilla2.jpg08. On the left (a borrowed picture) you see the Torre de Oro, which was built by the Almohad dynasty as watchtower and defensive barrier on the river. A chain was strung through the water from the base of the tower to prevent boats from traveling into the river port. (I love this story!)

09
. Seville hosts the Feria de Abril, the April Fair festival. I wrote a TT about it last year after I came back from the festival! You can read it here.

10. The only time I visited a bullring was in Seville in 2004. This is the Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza, considered to be one of the finest in Spain and one of the oldest (it was built in 1762 -1881 ) and most important in the world ( it was also immortalized in Bizet's Opera Carmen). I was happy the way I experienced it: no bulls and no torero in sight!

11. The arena accommodates 14,000 and, despite its size, the acoustics allow you to hear everything wherever you are sitting.

12.

13. Last but not least, here is a flamenco background to play with Photoshop, just place your face in the appropiate space! Seen downtown Barcelona last summer, sorry about the flash reflection, though...

  4. Oh, I'm just green of envy you know! I wanna come too!!!!

Seville sounds gorgeous and very interesting. That arena is soooo beautiful. Though I think I prefer to see it without bulls too, no bullshit ;-)

Miss Ass. Lifecruiser is looking for a place to live in Andalusia as priority 1, not sure she succeeds though... Andalusia is a fantastic place if you love horses. The Andalusian horse is like a dream, the most beautiful!!!!

Have a wonderful stay and don't forget to report to the cyber cruise afterwards :-P

  13. Must be a very interesting and beautiful town ! I also hate corridas and I am always so happy when the torreador is hurt or killed (that's even better) Can't understand how civilized people enjoy such a cruel game ! My holidays are over tomorrow we fly home but I had time to post for TT.
