These are Panellets (Catalan for little breads) in their original coloring, which looks like a sepia scene to me, no need to edit the picture! This round pastry is a bit smaller than a golf ball, and made out of ground almonds , sugar, and eggs. The most popular ones are the pictured pine nuts panellets, but there are other toppings like chopped almonds, shredded chocolate, or shredded coconut.
You can currently find them in almost any bakery or supermarket, as they are the traditional dessert of the All Saints holiday in Catalonia - accompanied by a sweet, aged white wine - during the celebration of the CastaƱada (Chestnut festival).

Honnestly they look disgusting ! I first thought you showed little brains for Halloween and then was thinking of larvas or white worms ! Yikes ! and that early in the morning !!
ReplyDeleteThey are naturally sepia! How do they taste? They look sweet but a bit dry (perfect for dipping right into that wine).
ReplyDeleteI thought they were little brains, too! :) ha.
ReplyDeleteI know I would love those!! Thanks for the birthday wishes, Mar, I would LOVE a lunch with you!!
ReplyDeleteVery nice entry! Looks yummy too:) LOL in Carmen! haha!
ReplyDeleteOh, yum!
ReplyDeleteMmmmmm... they look divine! I thought they were rice krispy treats with cinnamon!
ReplyDeleteHi Mar, One of those would go really good with my cup of coffee I'm sipping right now!!
ReplyDeleteI think they look yummy!
ReplyDeleteThey looked and sounded delicious until I read Gattina's comment!
ReplyDeleteNo really - lovely little treats.
Clever sepia post.

I'm going to have to go with the looks like brains too LOL
ReplyDeleteI knew what they were since my DIL's Mom and my SIL make them. In many varieties.
I love that the coloring is natural.
Oohh...I will look out for them when I go spain :)
ReplyDeletethat's a clever choice of the subject and yummy too, i'm sure :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a clever way to use your photo! I was intrigued to discover they were cookies - I would have thought they were bite sized in the picture. I like the Greek almond cookies that are this shape but then dusted in icing sugar. I wonder if they would taste the same?
ReplyDeleteThey do not look disgusting, they look delicious!!
ReplyDeleteWe have these sort of sweeties here too and I really love them but I didn't know about the relation with the All Saints Holidays.
ReplyDeletehose are pretty amazing looking....! I was surprised when you mentioned how small they are....Hard to tell from the picture---In Fact, I would have said they were the size of a small Tennis Ball......lol!
ReplyDeleteI bet they are quite yummy, yes?
I had two thoughts. At first I thought they were strange mounds of wormy things, and then thought they were some weird twists of lollies! Great imagination here! I am so glad I was so wrong! Great shot!
ReplyDeleteYummy! I wish we had a chestnut festival.
ReplyDeleteI very much wish you could provide samples with your post. I want to taste!
