This is Mr Mar's silver "Schieber", literally translated from German would be: pusher, which he would use instead of a small knife as a child. To push the food towards the fork.
And here is a detail of the handle: a little boy with a pack of clothes. The scenery must be South Germany, where he was born, because of the church and the mountains pictured. His mom handed out to me this wonderful piece shortly after we got married and it is my little treasure to keep. Not that I consider Mr Mar already an antique piece but let's face it: he was born in the past century! I should remain quiet since he is 11 months younger than me...
Wow! This is interesting. Honestly, I haven't seen a pusher.
ReplyDeleteCheers to your weekend!
That is so sweet! I have a piece of German history for this weeks theme myself. Be sure to check it out!
ReplyDeleteWell Mar... considering that it is the year 2007... MOST of us were born in the PAST century... myself included! *glares at Mar in defense of Mr. Mar* (i'm allowing that you MAY have a 6 or 7 year old reader somewhere) But... that IS a nifty little item! I had never even heard of a pusher ... except where drugs are concerned ... or brooms... and in which case I don't want either! What a NEAT antique! Mine is NOT up yet... but it will be by morning... I suppose... as soon as I choose one.
ReplyDeletenow that is some cool stuff! I love it... I'm up!
ReplyDeleteThat is such a great idea, I've never seen anything like that before!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all your comments over at my blog!
ReplyDeleteLol! In the past century ... lol! He'll love you for that one :o)

Wow, how great for you to have it. A wonderful keepsake! I agree with Melli, most of us are past century. We are antiques ourselves. :)
ReplyDeleteMines up too.
That's a lovely piece. I love the details on the Schieber. A treasure worth keeping. Thanks for sharing. My photo is up too.
ReplyDeleteThat is such a lovely item. And a great idea too. I have never seen anything like this before.
ReplyDeleteWonderful. This is amazing mar!! I've never heard of something like this!!! I learned something. And it's a treasure, and so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteMy antiques are posted....drop by if you can!!
What a wonderful device. It makes me think of a time when things were just so much more civilised. A time when children had table manners...
ReplyDeleteWhat a neat piece of cutlery. I love the detail on the handle! I don't know if I have ever seen one before. Great take on the theme! Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteLovely! :) What a wonderful keepsake. :) The mountains do make it look like it might be Bavarian. I also learned a new meaning for "Schieber" - the only definition I knew before was "gate" or "slide". Very cool. :)
ReplyDeleteThat is really awesome! I have never seen a pusher before. Very cool.
ReplyDeleteWow - now that is interesting. Don't think that I have ever seen a "pusher" before.
ReplyDeleteA Schieber ! how cute ! Nice his mother could keep it, mine was lost with everything during a bombing in Frankfurt. Yes indeed I should have put a picture of Mr. Gattino and me as antiques on my blog !
ReplyDeleteI have never seen or heard of a "pusher" but it would be neat for kids. Lovely choice for today!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea to have something made specifically to push your food towards your fork! What a grand idea!
ReplyDeleteVery cool! I've never seen such a thing!
ReplyDeleteMine's up too :)
Like others have mentioned, I have never seen one of these either. What did they do to us as small children, make us eat with our fingers or push things with bread? This is a beautiful piece.
ReplyDeleteMar - you are funny :)...Actually I have one of them too, but it is still at my mom's house in Germany.
ReplyDeleteBTW - I guess I am antique myself being born in the last century. And my husband is younger too - but only 3 months *grin*
Have a wonderful weekend :)
This is my favorite so far! I love the cloth the pusher is on, too!
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of this, but what a clever idea. And it is a beautiful piece of silver, too.
ReplyDeleteIt's beautiful. A piece of history to own. Happy weekend.
ReplyDeleteA pusher today might help lots of kids learn to eat with a fork and knife instead of their fingers! *S*
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photo!
Happy weekend - mine's up

How clever...I've never seen one of those and I've been to lots of antique stores. Thanks for sharing and for stopping by.
ReplyDeleteWe have never seen anything like this. It is really cool.
ReplyDeleteThat is one handy utensil that we should still have available. Much more polite than fingers, righ? ;0)
ReplyDeleteHow delicate and beautiful!
ReplyDeleteMine is up too.
Cheers!
What a marvelous piece of history. An very intelligent and practical invention, and so well designed and carved. I understand you keep at as treasure.
ReplyDeleteGreat entry
Nice piece. I don't think I have seen a pusher too like viamarie.
ReplyDeleteLOL, LOL...Well, this is not officially an antiques my dear sweet Mar...Almost, I guessm huh? But it sure is beautiful! I Love the detail of it, you know? Do they still make these pushers? Gee I hope so, because they have such a 'feel' of the past and tradition!
ReplyDeleteVery precious thin to have with a lot of memories, I'm sure. The wings of history always inspiring my fantasy to go back to that time.
ReplyDeleteThat very old time... *lol*
(sorry, couldn't resist it ;-)
In Finnish that's called "TUUPPARI"
