day 19: over the Alps

Two weeks ago I flew over the Alps on my way to Hamburg, Germany. I didn't have a window seat but the lady who did had to go somewhere at one point and she did that with great timing: we were flying over the French Alps and I had my very personal guide with me: Mr Mar. I just saw mountains, valleys, and little places, but he noticed we were flying exactly over the area called the Three Valleys . He pointed out places we know from our ski vacation but I was busy taking pics before the lady decided to come back and here is what I saw: lack of snow!( click to enlarge, then you might be able to see the small villages!) we hope to be skiing over Xmas so pls think snow! Can't ask him about the places pictured because he is currently in South America, and won't be back until the end of the month. Yes, I am a business widow!
Tomorrow I will post pics of the Andes, taken a year ago. That means they are pictures taken at the beginning of the summer. We'll see if the mountains look any different!

Update:
Here are some mountain peaks' stats I found while preparing tomorrow's post:
Aconcagua - the highest mountain in the western hemisphere; located in the Andes on the border between Chile and Argentina (22,841 ft /6,962 m high)
Mont-Blanc - Monte Bianco - the highest mountain peak in the Alps; on the border between France and Italy south of Geneva (15,774 feet/ 4,808 m high)
Matterhorn - a mountain in the Alps on the border between Switzerland and Italy (14,693 ft/ 4,478 m high); noted for its distinctive shape
Mount McKinley - a mountain in south central Alaska; the highest peak in North America (20,300 ft/ 6,194 m high)
Mount Everest - a mountain in the central Himalayas on the border of Tibet and Nepal; the highest mountain peak in the world (29,028 ft/ 8,848 m high)

  5. The highest peak in New Zealand is somewhere over 12,000 ft - and it always has snow. Hope there is lots for you on your ski holiday!
Next year we are going to the UK and I was surprised to discover how small their mountains are compared to the ones here.

well, I'd say that the Andes mountains have more snow than the Alps at the beginning of summer... we'll see it tomorrow!

  7. You know, when Hubby was flying, both European and domestically, he would give the passengers little tours of what they were seeing (if it was during the day). It was fabulous to see these from the air.
    Great shots, Mar.

  9. Mmm...I love mountains. They're so pretty.

I'll do my best to think snow, though I'm a little worried that if I do we'll get buried with it where I am! :)

  14. Some great photos here. I noticed the lack of snow a few days ago when I was travelling back from Cannes to UK. My friend in Sweden has already fitted snow tyres though!

  15. I have wanted to see the Matterhorn ever since I read "The Magic Mountain" back in the 60's. We flew over some of the French Alps too,(in early Oct.) and saw a little snow, but not very much.

  16. Even without snow they're gorgeous! But I will hope for many feet of snow, or whatever the metric equivalent is! P.S. When you get a chance, please stop by my blog - I need your Spanish expertise...
