october 12 : Columbus Day

(No Thursday 13 this week because today is a holiday in Spain - no memes on a holiday! but pls leave your link!)

Columbus Day is celebrated to honor the morning of October 12, 1492 when a sailor on board The Pinta sighted land , and a new era of European exploration and expansion began. The next day, the 90 crew members of Christopher Columbus's three-ship fleet ventured onto the Bahamian island of Guanahani, ending a voyage begun nearly ten weeks earlier in Palos, Spain . (excerpt from the net)

In March 1493, the Pinta, one of the 3 caravels, returned to Europe and arrived in Baiona, making the town's port the first to receive news of the discovery of America. A replica of the ship can be visited since 1992 and we did so last september. We also saw the statue of Martin Alonso Pinzon, the Pinta's captain, which is facing the harbor.

Violating all copyrights (so sue me! I intend no harm) I am posting a map of Spain here because a) I love maps, b) I was born without orientation senses whatsoever, therefore I am lost without a map, and c) you can see where Baiona is located, right above Portugal and near Vigo, look for the "star". And they made it back from the "New World" without a GPS...

Update: I was having legal problems (the map wouldn't show!) so I took it down, but the original (without a star!) can still be found here.

  4. isn't it amazing how these brave sailors in the middle ages navigated the waters without fully traced maps and without a proper navigation system? Fascinating... well, nonetheless, Columbus thought he had reached India instead of the "new world". Bless him.

  10. Ohhhhh goodness! Happy Columbus Day! (I can remember when we used to CELEBRATE this day in the US!) Back in the good ol' days! Those old ship captains were navigational wizards - weren't they!

  11. Happy Columbus day! here when they try to celebrate it the Native Americans get all in a tizzy because we "Anglos" came and took all their land...

My family didn't get here until the 1900's so I'm not taking any blame for that.
