castellers

Catalonia has many traditions, one of them are the castellers, they are the ones who construct towering piles of people known as castells or castles. Not only men. Women make for perfect upper tiers while children are on top, and they scramble up the adults like monkeys. This is a small "castell" I photographed at a local festival a month ago. There are huge ones! Click here for a bit of information.

I read that some people think castellers got their start in the Middle Ages, as a means of seeing what was happening on the other side of the castle walls. But that seems to be the romantic version!

  35. How interesting. Our cheerleaders over here do that at games, and they keep trying to go higher and higher, so we are hearing reports of trips to the hospital when they fall off the pyramid.
