A main street in Hamburg, Germany, and a collection of life-size figures, let me call them statues:
There were 100 life-size figures - designed by different artists- of Hamburg’s most famous water carrier, Hans Hummel, in the city centre for about 3 years until June 2006. Hans Hummel was the last water-carrier in Hamburg at a time when only a few houses still didn't have their own water-supplies back in the middle of the 19th century. He used to walk through Hamburg with his 2 heavy vats of water and he was considered to be an ill-tempered type, which gave the children all the more reason to tease him by calling him by the derisive nickname "Hummel, Hummel!" (English: bumble bee). Because the tormented water carrier was seldom able to catch the little rogues - he was always carrying great quantities of water for many kilometres into the town - his answer was mostly just : Mors, Mors, a Low German (Plattdeutsch) expression to be translated as “@rse, @rse!” (Info gathered from several net sources).
Note: I will be walking the streets of Hamburg as of Thursday and that is the reason for a short blogging break. Family (Mr Mar's side) and friends will demand all of my time and attention, and I am very happy about it. I shall return!!

I LOVE these. A fan of urban art.
ReplyDeleteOn behalf of the ABC Wednesday team, thank you!
Fascinating art work. I really like things like this. the poor man to be given so much trouble.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your break with family.
Quite amazing... reminds me of a similar art initiative we once had in Singapore, where many identical lions bearing the unique artwork of individual artists were strewn all over the island.

ReplyDeleteI love these Mar. They are just too cool for words. Have a great time my friend :)
ReplyDeleteOh wow I love this one. I can relate to Mr Hummel because I too carry two buckets every time I fetched water from the faucet outside in our house. That is before the water system in my home town in the Philippines doesn't have enough pressure to supply the whole community. That is why he is mean because he might be tired ^_^. I love all the different colors of Mr Hummel. Your post makes me awake today ^_^ Love it! Happy Wednesday!
ReplyDeleteenjoy your break and hope you get back with a stock of interesting photos :)
ReplyDeleteThose are very cool! I like how each is done by a different artist, for a great variety of expressions!

That's great. We had wolves here in Raleigh - for our NCSU Wolfpack. I know that Chicago had either cows or pigs, but I'm not sure about other cities.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun thing to see! Have a great time!
ReplyDeleteOh, those are fantastic. The first thing that came to mind when I saw the photo was an old Dutch children's song about two buckets of water.

How funny and interesting ! You will certainly have a great time, only the weather could be better ! I am leaving tomorrow (Friday) with a tear drop in my eyes, it was so wonderful here and it will be difficult to get used to the bad weather again after nearly 2 weeks of sunshine and blue sky !
