This is the Rossio Train Station . "Looking more like a theater or a lavishly adorned palace with horseshoe arched doorways, this monumental Neo-Manueline building located between Rossio and Restauradores squares, was built at a time when train stations were seen as temples of technology.
The Franco-Swiss author Blaise Cendrars called railway stations 'the most beautiful churches in the world,' and this station could be an example. It is one of the strangest architectural complexes housing a rail terminal in Europe, and today it is the local station for trains to Sintra. It was closed for over three years for major renovation, but reopened in February of 2008." Source-. More here.
On the arches you can read "Estacao" (Station) on the left and "Central" on the right. A close-up of the left arch is found above, click to enlarge for a better view. It truly looked like a magical place at night!!

Just beautiful! It looks like a dream :)
ReplyDeleteMagnificent. I dare say the Portuguese know how to design and build!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful building! Great night shots of it too...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful architecture!
ReplyDeleteWhat IS it with TRAIN stations? I had never been in Union Station (Washington DC's train station) until this summer. I don't travel by train, so just never had cause. But this summer I found myself there TWICE - and was absolutely AMAZED at what a beauuuuuuuutiful building it is! Architecturally superb - inside especially - but outside is nice too! Our airports are not like that --- and bus stations don't even come close! (as a matter of fact, bus stations are GROSS!) Soooooo... what IS it about TRAIN stations? This IS magnificent!
ReplyDeleteMy goodness, Mar, this rail station is extraordinary! So very beautiful! Thanks for posting it! Happy Window Views...and doors too! :)
ReplyDeleteThat is beautiful. I've been to Union Square in New York City and was amazed at the beauty of it. I guess if you travel by train they want you to experience the whole and not just the part. Wonderful picture :)
ReplyDeleteWow! I wish there were more places like this in the US instead of the "modern" crap they slap up all over as an excuse for architecture. :p
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing train station. So beautiful and like nothing I've ever seen.
ReplyDeleteIt looks so very romantic. My imagination is running to trips to exotic places, tearful farewells, joyful greetings! Maybe even all at once. :)
ReplyDeleteFantastic building! And your nigh shots are superb! I also like your shots of Lisbon. What a beautiful spot!
ReplyDeleteSpania is a an art center! This building is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteLove the colors!
ReplyDeleteWhat a picturesque railway station and very well captured!

ReplyDeleteWow! This is a beautiful building. I couldn't guess it is a train station. Love the horseshoe arched doorways.
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend, Mar!
beautiful architecture! i read somewhere (i think while researching today's theme :p) that "architecture is frozen music". and looking at this building, i agree 100%!
ReplyDeleteif it were me, i would write like this, i like traveling by trains. unlike other people the regular toot toot of the train is like music to my ears, it dulls my senses and i fall asleep almost immediately n wake up rested.
ReplyDeletevoila : u have a pic for the theme oledi. :) the point is to have fun, enjoy photohunters n our photography. be creative :)
Your photos are MAJESTIC and FABULOUS!!! Thank you for sharing these!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful, but since I have seen the palace of the last King of Egypt Faruk, I am slightly "blasé" lol !
ReplyDeleteWhat a BEAUTIFUL Place, Mar....As you said, it looks more like a Theatre or a Catherdral...! I assume that they restored it keeping the original beauty! It is GORGEOUS!
ReplyDeleteWhat an incredibly unusual design! With the horseshoes for luck, I thought at first it must be a casino. How grand! And with the delicate inset iron scrollwork for relief and contrast. Lovely.
