Day 5 of our 10-day trip to Germany found us visiting Erfurt and Weimar. In Erfurt we saw this newly renovated building, a red house from the 16th century Renaissance with the name Zum Breiten Herd (link in German only)- House of the Wide Stove, built in 1584. The ground floor was in fire in July 2008, that explains the house renovation. (I am always amazed about the things the net can tell us!)
Here is a closer picture of the top window and the decorations, including the Gaffköpfe (staring heads) and the figure of a servant on the very top.
And a cultural moment in which this blog shows you Goethe's home in Weimar. He lived here from 1782 until his death in 1832.
I love the architecture over there. It's so different than what I'm use to but could you imagine washing all those windows? I guess it's no different than a totally all glass building. Excellent photos :)
ReplyDeleteMar! You always find the BEST stuff! I absolutely LOVE those staring heads! And I'm so glad that I bigged the Goethe house too - because I thought that was a lemonade cart sitting in front - not a horse drawn carriage! LOL!
ReplyDeleteLove the last one with the horse and buggies!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful buildings and great craftsmanship on that first one.
ReplyDeleteWhat gorgeous panes of glass in the first building!
ReplyDeleteWOW! I so wanna go see all of that.
ReplyDeletewhat beautiful architecture. I love beautiful old buildings. thanks for sharing. If you want to wander down my road I’m home.
ReplyDeleteAmazing building, Mar - I had no idea that German Renaissance buildings were so ornately decorated and richly coloured: beautiful, in a slightly crazy way. Lovely to see Goethe's house; would give much to see Weimar, it must be a fascinating town.
ReplyDeleteLots of windows for a spectacular view.
ReplyDeletePS. Please check your reader if you are not seeing new posts for me. It seems my feed address changed while I was gone. I am posting daily. And most importantly, Rabbit, Rabbit!
Tons of windows! The owners must crave lots of sunshine. (Me too!)
ReplyDeleteI am enjoying your architectural shots so much. I love the detail in the first one but I think if I got to choose one to live in, I'd go for Goethe's house.
ReplyDeleteHow beautiful ! there I have never been !
