Northern snapshots

We flew with a popular low-cost Irish airline to Germany, the small airport was located near Lübeck (about 60 Km/ 38 miles from Hamburg) and that's where we went for dinner that evening. We were welcomed by this peaceful scenery, displaying many windows and some ivory buildings...

This is a major landmark, the Holstentor, a late Brick Gothic city gate, the only still existing one beside the Burgtor and part of the medieval fortifications of Lübeck . It used to appear on the back of the 50 DM banknote: (Update- 50 DM would be 25 euros today or USD 35)

  1. I have never been up north !But I saw it in a "Tatort" and it reminds Soko Wismar buildings they look a little alike ! Fortunately I get my general knowledge through TV ! The bank note also reminds me the days we always had to change our BF when we went to Aachen. Btw how was your flight ? OK ?

  3. I love the reflections in the first picture and the second one so is what I picture most of what I picture Europe to look like. Excellent photos. How much is a 50DM banknote worth in American Dollars?

  6. I had a pleasant surprise when I saw your photo - you see my husband was born in Lubeck and left there at the age of 5 when his mother moved to England to marry. He has never returned but has told me as much as he can remember about the place. So it was lovely to see your pics today. I will follow your link to see more.Thanks.

  10. Mar, these shots are beautiful! There is just sO much "character" in those scenes! Of course we Americans think they are Fairy Tale photos - fairy tales are the ONLY place WE get to see such architecture! Thank you for sharing!
