pumpkin exhibition

This is the Ludwigsburg’s Residence Palace near Stuttgart, Germany's largest baroque castle. It has around 450 rooms of which 75 can be seen but only on a guided tour. Which we didn't do, as we wanted to visit the Pumpkin Exhibition (claimed to be the world's largest!) on the huge garden known as Blühendes Barock (Blooming Baroque). Behind the palace is a smaller but even more formal Baroque garden with everything in perfect symmetry (picture on the left) and from here it is possible to see Schloss Favorite, a smaller palace that served as a hunting lodge (picture on the right, click to enlarge)

The yearly pumpkin exhibition is being held this time from 09/05 until 11/02 displaying 500,000 units (although some sites said 400,000) and over 450 pumpkin varieties, This year's theme is "Journey to the Stars" and there were/are UFOs, rockets, planets and the 12 star signs to be admired, all made from nothing but pumpkins.

There was a market place as well, a small restaurant offering everything pumpkin-made, even pumpkin sparkling wine! which I didn't try - it was warm and at lunch time some sparkling water sounded more appealing.

We also visited the Fairytale Garden (Märchengarten)- which illustrates several famous German fairytales with houses, castles, and scenes famous from the most popular stories- as well as the large orangery, which is used for special exhibitions and displays. Therefore... more pictures to come!

I had set my camera for websites-picture quality just to try it. It surely allows for a huge quantity of pictures but I wasn't happy with the quality results... will never do it again.

  6. It looks like a beautiful castle, and the pumpkin exhibition is amazing. In fact I have to admit I wouldn't recognise some of those varieties as pumpkins at all. My only knowledge of pumpkin is something large, round and orange! I look forward to the future posts.

  7. Michele sent me to check out your pumpkin photos- I can't get over all those things made of pumpkins- not pictures cut into pumpkins as is the custom here! It certainly seems a lot kinder to the pumpkin.
I think I liked the kangaroo best.

  8. What an extraordinary place. The outside of the palace is stunning and I am astounded by the pumpkin displays. They are unbelievable. Here I thought North Carolina had pretty amazing pumpkins (we have enormous ones at our Fair and Farmer's market)and there are lots of pumpkin and gourd displays around town but the pumpkin exhibition you have here make ours look like a little two horse town. I enjoyed this so much.

  15. WOW! The whole place is so impressive. I'd much rather visit there and see the pumpkins than go to Disney World. I've grown pumpkins that start yellow and turn orange and others that start green and turn orange. Michele should see this for herself.
