one dinner, two blisters, and three couples

My bare feet are always treated to leather sandals in the summer and cotton (or wool) socks otherwise. Only sometimes I have to wear (high) heels and dressy pants, and that calls for short stockings. Polyester. In its purest expression. Horror for my feet. But I am fine as long as the event doesn't involve much walking, and it normally doesn't.

We took two visiting foreign couples out to dinner last night, a business evening. As usual we took the train to reach Barcelona city , picked the visitors up at their hotel downtown and then took two taxis to reach our restaurant which had a splendid view overlooking the old port. It was a very pleasant evening, with nice conversation, great wine and a delicious meal.

But that's not what I remember the most now... We tried to get a taxi when we got out of the restaurant... not only it was late on a sunday evening: there were two major sports events taking place so many taxi drivers decided they wouldn't work, they would rather watch the Formula 1 race instead beginning at 7 pm, followed by a soccer game (Barcelona vs Real Madrid, ouch- 0:2). The streets were not busy at all around midnight, which is uncommon in this city. The few taxis we saw were all busy... And we ended up walking over 1/2 an hour until we got to the hotel, I was feeling my very sore feet but remained quiet because there really wasn't any alternative. The numbers we had to phone a taxi were all busy. Finally got a taxi to drive us home but the damage was done...*sigh*

And that's why I will be spending this monday morning at home wearing the softest cotton socks I own on my feet! We have tiled floors and I really should wear slippers, but not this morning!

  1. Poor girl apparently you have feet like the princess in I don't remember fairy tale but she had to dance and not to walk !

My husband also was glued to the TV and watched F 1 (that's the only sport he is interested in) and I had to play the watch dog that nobody disturbed him ! Today he mourns because M. Schumacher lost and will leave.. Poor man !

  5. I'm sorry with what you've gone through. You had a lovely time and dinner with friends and to be just ruined by not having to get a taxi for quite some time. How's your feet doing? I could give you a foot massage if you were just here.
    Thanks for dropping by.

Thanks, Friday's! it's the thought that counts...ahhh, a foot massage!

  6. Yikes! I hate blisters! And especially when you're in a place that you can't take your shoes off and walk barefoot if necessary. Hope they heal up quick, poor thing!

    Have a great week!

  7. You know, one time when Hubby and I first got together I was wearing 4 inch spike heels. (Hubby is 6 feet four inches and I am 5 feet 8 inches so the spikes made me look very tall)
Anyway, I had to walk through JFK Airport in NY and then our flight was cancelled and I had to walk back out of the terminal to the employees parking area and about half way back, the blisters were so bad I ended up taking the spikes off and walking barefoot! I gave the shoes to a friend and vowed to never wear foolish shoes like that again. And I never have.

But mine are "only" 5cm = 2 inches and rather comfy... :(
what kills me are the stockings...

needless to say, I am with you wearing nice, soft cotton socks today!

  12. Ohhhhhh dear! Poor Mar! Poor feet. And a foot MASSAGE won't even help... how sad! I hope you kept your feet UP today and sipped plenty of coffee! (I'm proud to admit that I don't even OWN a pair of high heels anymore! If needed I would have to go BUY some!)

  13. Ouch, I feel the pain... We've all been there hah, with the blisters and all. A lot of pain just to be dressed up nice.

I've always wondered how certain women can go around in high heels all the time without any noticable pain. Maybe they're sscreaming inside? *lol*

  14. On the third day we were in Rome, I developed blisters on the balls of both feet. It was horrible, and walking any further was like a death sentence. When we got back to the hotel, I put Neosporin with pain killers on the area, and covered them with Bandaids. The next day, I could walk with no problems. Maybe you need some Neosporin?

  17. I rate my shoes by how long my feet are comfortable in them. I have a pair of 1/2 hour boots up to my 4 hour athletic shoes. Sometimes there is just no way to judge how long you're going to be on your feet though.
Your feet have earned their nice soft slippers.
I've got a foot massager under my computer desk I would loan you...but it doesn't fit through the modem... sorry.

  18. Ouch! I'm rubbish in high heels ... and as you were in business company I dont suppose you could take them off and walk bare foot either?

  19. Oh, ouch. Last year we walked the entire Boboli Gardens in Florence, and my feet were throbbing! But that was in kinder shoes! I hope your meal was outstanding. :)

I just saw a TV show about Barcelona. What an incredible city. Made me want to hop on a plane and visit tomorrow. It's on our list. :)
