Just a short, hidden note: I visited Berlin for the first time in 1987 and we visited the "other" side as part of an organized bus tour, which only lasted a couple of hours and showed only the very best... The wall came down in Nov 1989. German reunification was concluded on October 3rd, 1990 and since then it is a holiday in Germany. Mr Mar was lucky enough not to have seen his family separated by the wall but I don't want a sad post here: I only wanted to have a few pics saved here for posterity, happy Wednesday! And below you see Mr Mar , who went up the provided platform to have a peek over the wall...
wow, thank you so much for that. Being an American and not well traveled until very recently, that was something I heard about and just able to imaging how it was. Very good WW. Thanks for sharing that.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great WW entry! Thanks! :-))
ReplyDeleteAnd Happy Celebration! :-)
Oh, this is so cool.
ReplyDeleteWe will be visiting Berlin at the half term break this month. I am very excited to see the city!
Excellent. I loved how that wall came done...without a shot fired. Have a great WW. :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I lived in Germany for four years and miss it a lot! Happy WW!
ReplyDeleteHow things have changed! Happy WW :)
ReplyDeleteI for one, was very glad to see it go. It's interesting to see your pictures though.
ReplyDeleteI loved in Berlin the summer of 1989 before the Wall came down. Times were tense then. What a happy day it was when the Wall came down and Germany was unified!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos Mar. My only visit to Berlin was in the 80s when the wall was still up. One piece of grafitti on the Western side of teh wall did amuse me: "Warning! Practice area for East German Pole Vault Team"
ReplyDeleteBrings it all back. To think it wasn't so long ago. This is a great post considering Ken Burns's documentary is running. What horrible foolishness all of that was. Thanks for some great pics.
ReplyDeleteI was 17 and in my last year of school when that happened. We didn't have a TV, but I remember getting myself to the nearest one when I heard what was happening. I remember watching and crying and not really knowing why -- seeings as I have no known relatives from Germany or even Europe. But what a momentus, powerful, and awe-inspiring event! Thanks for sharing the anniversary with us and the pictures, too.
ReplyDeletewonderful entry! for tomorrow's holiday.
ReplyDeleteGuten Abend Herr Mar!
Well, it's a part of modern european history.
ReplyDeleteI went to Berlin - by boat (sic) in 1965. And was immidiatly put in a military jail when passing the frontier between BDR and DDR.
Great entry
A great entry for this week's WW. I remember seeing the wall coming down, on the evening news. Happy WW!
ReplyDeleteThese were fantastic! My favorite so far!! I love how it all came crumbling down.
ReplyDeleteI love your interesting shots. I think your pictures are good enough for a history textbook (= Have fun and thanks for the visit (=
ReplyDeleteI remember quite well when that happened. A few years later, Raleigh was the recipient of a huge chunk of the wall, and I remember seeing it for the first time and wondering how mamny people had touched that portion - on both sides of the wall. It was a very sobering thought.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post. You put pictures to the stories we all heard for so long. Happy WW!
ReplyDeletevery interesting. i like how you did this post. thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeletehappy ww
You're so great at bringing history to us first hand.
ReplyDeleteMy husband has been there, I have not...Great entry!
ReplyDeleteThat would have been something to see...great shots:)
ReplyDeletewonderful shots!
ReplyDeletevery appropriate for the country's holiday. :)
happy WW
I remember when that wall came down -- what a great day!
ReplyDeleteBravo Mar, a very good post ! I always forget that since the fall of the wall the national day is now on October 3 ! I was so used to the 17 Juni although I have never seen anything else than a day off and therefore a changed TV program.
ReplyDeleteIn 1959 when I came to Belgium it was not very well seen to be German. Everybody told me how much they had suffered during the war and all Germans were bad except me of course. I learned very quickly not to be German ! It's only now in the generation of my son people who are around 30 they are not ashamed anymore to be German. I was 2 years old when the war ended ! The last slap in my face I got in 1992 when I wanted to visit my son who worked in London and he told me not to say that I am german ! It touched me very much because I thought that now in the second generation after the war Hitler's phantom is still there.
Oh wow. I would love to visit the Berlin Wall. Thanks for the pics and write-up.
ReplyDeleteGreat entry Mar! What a piece of history!
ReplyDeleteHappy Wednesday my friend!
Beautiful photos :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the visit.
Happy WW!
History before our eyes, Mar....I have mixed feelings about Germany, I'm sorry to say, but that is the thruth of it.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe it's nearly been 20 years since the wall came down. These are great photos - a reminder of a different time.
ReplyDeleteI'm trying this week to look a bit more thoroughly at the WW sites and just wanted to say that I really like yours - beautiful photos and nice writing! All the best.
Brilliant shots of a very different time.
ReplyDeleteThis brings back loads of memories... Berlin was my home until 1984. The first time I saw it without the wall was for Christmas in 2005.
ReplyDeleteGosh! Where has the time gone!!?
What a great shot! Happy WW!
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to read (and see) something 'bout Germany. I thought of writing something about "Tag der deutschen Einheit". But I decided to just post another funny pic.
ReplyDeletePlease stop by if you like to.
Hugs and happy WW,

Wow great pictures. I'm sure it was an emotional trip!
ReplyDeleteI was in high school when the wall came down. I remember watching TV and getting the word that it was all over.
ReplyDeleteAnd I do still get chills when I hear Reagan's speech, "Mr. Gorbachev, Mr. Garbachev, tear down this wall!"
Very cool pics...and great back story!

Wow, history in the making. Not a sad post, but really amazing!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post. I remember watching the wall come down on tv and wishing I could be there.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting post Mar! Just today I helpt Mélissa to do her historia homework and it spoke about the reunification between the two Germania!!! I remember the day the wall felt! I was with my german teacher and it was a beautiful event! We thought to people, to families who were separated since a so long time. Hope all walls there are still in the world will fallen too one day!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this with us!! Happy WW!
ReplyDeleteI remember the Wall coming down, sitting hunched in front of the TV watching events unfold.
ReplyDeleteI have seen interviews with families split by the Wall and they were enough to break your heart.
Good riddance to the Wall!
cq
amazing entry. (I don't participate in Wordless Wednesday)
ReplyDeleteI was in Berlin in 2003 for the first time. I went all over the city and saw what was left of the wall. Unbelievable. I will never forget watching the fall of the wall on TV in 89.
We went to the Jewish museum in Berlin, what an amazing place!
those are really important photos and I'm glad you posted them.
ReplyDeleteI come from Germany, but not from Berlin. These are good pictures. Great.
ReplyDeletethere should be a sign at the old berlin wall witch says:
