wordless wednesday Just a short, hidden note: I visited Berlin for the first time in 1987 and we visited the "other" side as part of an organized bus tour, which only lasted a couple of hours and showed only the very best... The wall came down in Nov 1989. German reunification was concluded on October 3rd, 1990 and since then it is a holiday in Germany. Mr Mar was lucky enough not to have seen his family separated by the wall but I don't want a sad post here: I only wanted to have a few pics saved here for posterity, happy Wednesday! And below you see Mr Mar , who went up the provided platform to have a peek over the wall...
wow, thank you so much for that. Being an American and not well traveled until very recently, that was something I heard about and just able to imaging how it was. Very good WW. Thanks for sharing that.

ReplyDeleteI loved in Berlin the summer of 1989 before the Wall came down. Times were tense then. What a happy day it was when the Wall came down and Germany was unified!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos Mar. My only visit to Berlin was in the 80s when the wall was still up. One piece of grafitti on the Western side of teh wall did amuse me: "Warning! Practice area for East German Pole Vault Team"

ReplyDeleteI was 17 and in my last year of school when that happened. We didn't have a TV, but I remember getting myself to the nearest one when I heard what was happening. I remember watching and crying and not really knowing why -- seeings as I have no known relatives from Germany or even Europe. But what a momentus, powerful, and awe-inspiring event! Thanks for sharing the anniversary with us and the pictures, too.

Well, it's a part of modern european history.
ReplyDeleteI went to Berlin - by boat (sic) in 1965. And was immidiatly put in a military jail when passing the frontier between BDR and DDR.

ReplyDeleteI remember quite well when that happened. A few years later, Raleigh was the recipient of a huge chunk of the wall, and I remember seeing it for the first time and wondering how mamny people had touched that portion - on both sides of the wall. It was a very sobering thought.

ReplyDeleteBravo Mar, a very good post ! I always forget that since the fall of the wall the national day is now on October 3 ! I was so used to the 17 Juni although I have never seen anything else than a day off and therefore a changed TV program.
ReplyDeleteIn 1959 when I came to Belgium it was not very well seen to be German. Everybody told me how much they had suffered during the war and all Germans were bad except me of course. I learned very quickly not to be German ! It's only now in the generation of my son people who are around 30 they are not ashamed anymore to be German. I was 2 years old when the war ended ! The last slap in my face I got in 1992 when I wanted to visit my son who worked in London and he told me not to say that I am german ! It touched me very much because I thought that now in the second generation after the war Hitler's phantom is still there.

History before our eyes, Mar....I have mixed feelings about Germany, I'm sorry to say, but that is the thruth of it.

ReplyDeleteVery interesting post Mar! Just today I helpt Mélissa to do her historia homework and it spoke about the reunification between the two Germania!!! I remember the day the wall felt! I was with my german teacher and it was a beautiful event! We thought to people, to families who were separated since a so long time. Hope all walls there are still in the world will fallen too one day!

ReplyDeleteI was in Berlin in 2003 for the first time. I went all over the city and saw what was left of the wall. Unbelievable. I will never forget watching the fall of the wall on TV in 89.
We went to the Jewish museum in Berlin, what an amazing place!
