urban sight

The city of Barcelona is filled with wonderful examples of art nouveau . Here's a taste of it, an entrance in the central Paseo de Gracia, perhaps Barcelona's most elegant avenue and one of the best architectural walks in the city . I would have only had a shy peek but the blogger in me had the camera ready and didn't hesitate to walk in and take some pictures. Click to enlarge, the details are beautiful.

This door was found to the right of the entrance, before the steps:

..

Note to self: Art nouveau flourished in a number of European countries, many of which developed their own names for the style. Art nouveau was known in France as style Guimard, after French designer Hector Guimard; in Italy as the stile floreale (floral style) or stile Liberty, after British art nouveau designer Arthur Lasenby Liberty; in Spain as modernisme; in Austria as Sezessionstil (secession style); and in Germany as Jugendstil (youth style). These diverse names reflect the widespread adoption of the movement, which had centres in major cities all over Europe—Paris and Nancy in France; Darmstadt and Munich in Germany; Brussels, Belgium; Glasgow, Scotland; Barcelona, Spain; Vienna, Austria; Prague, Czech Republic; and Budapest, Hungary. 1. Very beautiful ! I am like you wherever I go I look with my Blogger eyes and HAVE to take a picture !
I have to complain ! You forgot the most important Art Nouveau Architect Victor Horta !! "undoubtedly the key European Art Nouveau architect." Indeed, Horta is one of the most important names in Art Nouveau architecture, says Wikipedia, lol !

  4. Absolutely amazing! I always wonder about doors that have the handle in the MIDDLE... doesn't that make them a bit awkward to open?

last time we went through Barcelona in the summer of 2005, we only spent 5 hours +/- and I think we need to go back (in the very near future) and spend a lot more time exploring the city!

  12. Very pretty! My friend Jen posted on her blog a quiz about Art Nouveau that is very funny. DD had a blast trying to figure out the difference between Art Nouveau and Art Deco...she did very well and of course she got all the cheese questions. (you've just gotta see the quiz to understand that.)
